BMOL20080 Metabolism, Immunity&Infection

This course is split into two sections. Part 1 focuses on metabolism and the endocrine system, whilst part 2 introduces infection and immunity. In part 1, we will take the information learned about the molecules of life and examine the processes necessary for generation of energy and biosynthetic pathways. Topics will include glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation, and lipid and amino acid metabolism. In addition, we will learn how metabolism is controlled by hormones of the endocrine system, and how metabolic regulation is disrupted in diabetes. In part 2, we will discuss the role that microbes play in health and disease. Using specific examples of tuberculosis, hospital acquired infections (MRSA) and Hepatitis C, students will learn how pathogenic microbes cause disease, and how we can counter these infections using various treatment and prevention strategies. The interaction between microbes and the host’s innate and adaptive immune systems will also be discussed. Specific topics to include an examination of the cells and molecules involved in immunity, Toll-like receptors, the Complement system, immunity-based signaling, antigen presentation and antibody production.

despite being content heavy, it was actually a really interesting module and definitely worth the extra bit of time it takes to maintain a high grade.

Some of the lecturers have interesting info and there is a cross over with other module info also.

In hindsight, much easier to study than I thought at the time.

SIT AT THE FRONT. (Or as close as you can get) I know it's not cool or whatever but the notes are impossibly complicated or patchy, the lecturers move very fast and no one seems to understand what a microphone is for

It was overwhelming and difficult at times, especially if you're not interested in biochemistry. Plus, the lectures weren't delivered well.

Probably the most difficult module I have done to date. A lot of material for a single module, lots of reactions and cycles and its quite detailed. If it's not a core for you then just don't do that to yourself, unless for some reason you like that sort of thing.

avoid at all costs if you can or start studying from day 1

too much content

The course is divided in 2 parts one being metabolism and two being immunity and infection. This made it easy to follow

Very useful information to have moving on. It requires a lot of time and effort so be wary of that.
