BMOL20090 Molecular Genetics and Biotech

In living cells nucleic acids direct both self-replication and synthesis of proteins. DNA also undergoes mutation and recombination, which ultimately generate biodiversity and allow evolution to proceed. The course will cover the basics of these fundamental biological processes and explain how this knowledge is exploited in recombinant DNA technology. Specific areas include: nucleic acid structure; DNA replication; mutation and repair; transcription and translation; control of gene expression; gene cloning, DNA sequencing and genetic engineering. The lecture course will be assessed by an end-of-trimester examination. In addition, students will work in groups to design oral presentations that focus on selected topics from the course. Students will learn how to design Powerpoint slides, and how to incorporate images and animations. Grades will be awarded based on individual contributions to the group project.

The module has been slightly altered compared to previous years. 20% of the grade is comprised of four genetics assignments, which were quite difficult for many students, I found them good but time consuming. The exam is a 100 Question MCQ worth 80% of the grade. The module was challenging, but the material covered was overall very interesting and a solid introduction to Genetics.

Good module. CA ok but having to video yourself talking about project was a bit of a pain. Core for all BBB students. Final test ok all though 100 mcq questions was a lot. Wouldn’t recommend as an elective

Very difficult module, a lot of pretty abstract topics are introduced for the first time so there’s a pretty big learning curve. Assessment included an essay during the semester and a group project, which are two things most people don’t enjoy.

Very difficult module. A lot of content with slides that are very hard to get notes from. Worksheets are worth so little with lots of work involved. Also have a lot of practical skills involved when main focus is theory in lectures. Required for BBB sciences, would not reccoumend as an elective

Very useful module & covers a lot of important basics! However, too much challenging material is squashed into one module. Would not let this module put you off genetics (3rd year modules are actually easier I found!) & wouldn’t take as an elective for this reason

really good lectures especially O'Sullivan, good module to take prior to Principles of genetics.

recommend, the CA is ok

its too difficult and stressful, especially trying to do the Wiki in a group.

Pretty sure its a core module for all BBB students unfortunately. Wouldn't recommend it as an option or an elective though as it is a lot of work

Personally, I was not too keen on this module as I found it rather challenging and the topics did not particularly interest me.

The content and skills learnt in this module were beneficial in later modules and the wiki project although was a pain at times will be useful in the future and improved my IT skills.

Yes and no - many people found the content reasonably difficult, however this is a really interesting module and if you make most of the lectures you can easily do well, especially with a lot of marks going for continuous assessment.

Absolutely! Coverts a whole new range of genetics material that isn't done in Intro Modules

It's a good basis to genetics for biochemistry especially

While this module may have been challenging at times, it was still interesting and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in genetic processes.

If you want to go down the road of Genetics, this module is useful and interesting
