CHEM10050 Basis of Organic and Biological Chemistry

The module is an introduction to organic chemistry, the chemistry of carbon compounds. It is a core module for students planning to pursue programmes in Biology or Chemistry, and is also suitable as an elective for students, with a good background in chemistry at second level, wishing to learn more about the chemistry of living things. It covers the common organic molecules (alkenes, alcohols, amines, carbonyls etc.) and emphasises their recognition, naming, reactions and relevance to everyday life and health. Specific topics include 3D aspects of chemistry, what exactly happens in a chemical reaction and how it is done in practice. A significant proportion of the module is devoted to the larger molecules of life (proteins, carbohydrates, fats) and shows how these can be understood in terms of simpler molecules.

Very large class, You'll be no problem if you're good at chemistry. The practice quiz was very helpful but I'm not sure if they're still doing this.

The labs are enjoyable and there is a group presentation that is basic enough

If you've done chemistry for the LC it would probably be very easy but was also not overly difficult for someone with no previous chemistry background, do intro to chemistry 1st though (CHEM00050)

I would recommend this module to others as it is a core for all BBB and CCS degrees. However, I would still recommend it even if you do not plan on doing a degree in either of the above mentioned streams as it is a very enjoyable module with two very good lecturers. The labs are also very enjoyable and the demonstrators are always on hand to help you.
