EDUC10200 Young Adult Fiction: Readers, Rebels & Realisation

This module explores story, reading and engagement with literature in the lives of young people. It is open to students from all disciplinary backgrounds. As the young adult fiction genre attracts more and more critical commentary, we consider the literary text as a potent source of personal, philosophical and educational meaning for young people and adults - as a potential locus for growth, realisation and emancipation. Engaging with an International scope of texts, including graphic novels and contemporary poetry, we will consider educating through literature for literacy and for life. We will explore the responsibility of the text, the young reader and the engaged adult, from pre-verbal through to formal educational relationship and the text as educator. Reading will include Northern Lights, The Crossover, Children of Blood and Bone, Illegal: The Graphic Novel, In Paris with You and others. A reading list will be provided in advance.
