EEEN20070 Solid State Devices

This course aims to provide an introduction to the electrical properties of materials, in particular crystalline semiconductors, and then to use this foundation to develop a basic understanding of the physical operating principles of the common electronic devices. The topics covered include: - Introduction to Quantum Mechanics and Energy Band Theory - Definitions of metal, insulator and semiconductor based on existence of energy bands in crystalline material - Classification of semiconductor materials - Charge transport in metals and pure and doped semiconductors - Continuity and Poisson equations - Principles of semiconductor processing; Moore's Law - Ideal PN junction: electrostatic behaviour of depletion layer; physical explanation and derivation of static current-voltage characteristic - The Metal-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET); MOS capacitor; DC characteristic; applications - The Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT): structure of NPN and PNP bipolars; operating principles; characteristics; applications

Decent module but fairly impenetrable lectures - especially the first chapter. Difficult homework but exams were fairly easy

A well taught and very interesting module. However, the content is a big step up in difficulty from the first year modules so be forewarned. However, the exams are remarkably easy and the HW is only a bit more challenging. If you engage with the material from the beginning and interact with the lecturer if you face any difficulties, you will learn a lot.

Don't let chapter 1 scare you off, stick through it and you'll be g , chap 1 the hardest of the 4. Quite interesting stuff, physical basis of semiconductor devices. Final exam is chill enough

The contents of the module are extremely interesting, the only problem is, you will have to teach yourself. The lecturer in my year was Reza Nikandish, and by the end of the semester only a few people attended his lectures
