GENE30020 Genome Structure and Evolution

The advent of next generation sequencing has allowed us to study the development and evolution of organisms in unprecedented detail. This module will consist of lectures and tutorials in which students are familiarized with different aspects of genomics and transcriptomics analyses. This includes gene function and comparative expression analyses, genome wide association studies, and phylogenetics. Students will be made familiar with the theoretically underpinnings of the different topics as well as with relevant databases and software. Three short essays on different topics will be assessed and serve to deepen the theoretical understanding of genome structure and evolution. A short project using one of the tools introduced will familiarize students with the intricacies of computational analyses.

Really liked this module! Project choice allows you to tailor it to your interests & really useful to practice academic writing. No final exam is a plus.

I would advise it for those looking for a challenge to really write academically and grasp a subject in detail. It certainly gives you an appreciation for what geneticists must go through regularly and some insight as to what a career in genetics might be like. Also having no final exam relieves some stress from the other exams
