PHYC10050 Astronomy & Space Science

We live in a golden age of astronomy. This module provides an introduction to astronomy, from the earliest theories through to the most current scientific knowledge of the universe. Topics include the solar system, extrasolar planets, the sun, stars and their evolution, black holes, gravitational waves and the Big Bang. There is an emphasis on the role of space-based technology in our understanding of the formation and evolution of the universe and its contents. This module is not highly mathematical or quantitative and is probably not appealing to students seeking a rigorous mathematical introduction to the subject.

Antonio is very enthusiastic and knows a lot and it can be seen through his teaching. However, many of us (as science students) did not enjoy the way it was taught - online videos and then summary in person lectures. Regardless, the content is very interesting and the final exam is good!

Sure, it is a nice module where the professor is very interesting. But please, don't let this take away from the fact that the module is very very very heavy in content. A lot of things to learn. Though, yes, if you study for it religiously it is impossible to fail (given 40% online MCQs that you get 100% in nearly all quizzes), but for the exam you need to know everything.

loved this module - the lecturer Antonio is very charismatic and passionate. if you pay attention to the content, the final exam is very easy, some of the questions even repeat from the continuous assessments

Loved this module to pieces but a lot of work. Spent more time on this than my core modules cause I'm slow to watch prerecorded lectures. I like to pause them a lot and absorb the info and he makes very full slides. Really easy to understand. Just a lot in it. Antonio will make you fall in love with space. No regrets.

Antonio's lectures are great so it's a fun elective to take if you've any interest in Astronomy.

Subject matter is very interesting and anyone with a slight interest in astronomy should take this module. Lecturer is very engaging and enjoyable to listen to.

The final exam gives very similar questions to the continuous assessment, so it's reasonably easy to do well (even if, like myself, you have no background in physics)

All the assessment is MCQ, the continuous is all online so Google is your friend - and you an take assessments repeatedly until you figure out the right answers.
