STAT10050 Practical Statistics

This module focusses on practical statistics and computation in real-world scenarios. Students will cover: - How statistics are used - How to turn data into information - How to create statistical graphics - How to obtain data from surveys and designed experiments - Probability theory and random variables The module is run through short, video-based lectures, which students are expected to watch every week. Contact with the lecturer and tutors is through the live computer labs run every week from week 3. In the computer labs, students will learn how to use analyse and visualise data in the R statistical computing language.

The lecture material is mostly ok. However for the lab material i found R difficult because I had no programming experience so in my case I had to put a lot of work into the module to understand it myself and I also found the tutors unhelpful. So my advice is not to take it if you don’t have previous knowledge of statistics / programming / coding because it will take up too much of your time for just 1 elective.

The module is relatively easy and has minimal hours so leaves your timetable nice. The end exam is ok and the difficulty rarely gets over LC level stats.

You learn how to use Minitab and R which are powerful tools to do statistical work with.

It's an easy enough module as it's only the basics of statistics so most things you will have covered in school

Even if you're not doing stats or maths, this module is fairly easy if you have good maths (stats) skills and is not time intensive at all.

I would recommend this module to anyone doing stats, it is a very easy introduction to statistics software that you will use in future modules.

I would highly recommend it as an elective because there is minimal attendance and you get to learn a small bit of programming which is cool.

Basic module that covers the very basics of statistics at the beginning and progresses steadily into slightly more advanced material, but nothing that is unmanageable. Very doable if you are in a course that does no statistics, and very easy if you have done statistics in the past. Does not get much more advanced than the stats from Leaving Cert. Alternative grading scale though so it is very hard to get an A+ in this module. 50% final exam, 2x15% lab exams in person and 20% from lecture quizzes and lab quizzes (R and Minitab). Using these software can be challenging with no previous experience, mainly R.
